The 10706B is a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michelson_interferometer\">michelson interferometer<\/a>. Michelson interferometers use the interference between a reference and measurement beam in order to measure distances of a few hundred nanometers. <\/p>\n<p>The image below <a href=\"http:\/\/cp.literature.agilent.com\/litweb\/pdf\/05517-90111.pdf\">from the HP docs<\/a> shows the path of the reference and measurement beams:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/41j.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/interferometer-notes\/inter3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2845\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/41j.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/inter3.png\" alt=\"inter3\" width=\"447\" height=\"647\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2845\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I started playing around with it. Initially just to understand the beam path and see if I could see the beam reflected off the measurement mirror. I setup the laser and interferometer as shown above and could see the reflected beam. As expected the reflected beam dimmed when I occluded the mirror. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/41j.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/interferometer-notes\/inter2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2842\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/41j.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/inter2.jpg\" alt=\"inter2\" width=\"795\" height=\"737\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2842\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this configuration it&#8217;s very unlikely that I&#8217;d be able to see the reference and measurement beams interfering.
