The tip is mounted in the center, the setup seems to produce reasonable (but far from perfect) results. I&#8217;ve seen a couple of projects based around this idea. The earliest seems to be <a href=\" http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20121105132057\/http:\/\/www.geocities.com\/spm_stm\/\">John Alexanders project<\/a> which is now only available via the Internet archive.<\/p>\n<p>The second is a Colorado State University project that was presented at a conference, the paper is linked here:<\/p>\n<p>2006-2314: A NANOTECHNOLOGY EXPERIMENT: DESIGN OF LOW COST SCANNING TUNNELING MICROSCOPES, Nebojsa Jaksic, Colorado State University-Pueblo: <a href=\"http:\/\/search.asee.org\/search\/fetch;jsessionid=27hfbgml1nk4y?url=file%3A%2F%2Flocalhost%2FE%3A%2Fsearch%2Fconference%2F12%2F2006Full2314.pdf&#038;index=conference_papers&#038;space=129746797203605791716676178&#038;type=application%2Fpdf&#038;charset=\">pdf<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/41j.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/2006Full2314.pdf\">local copy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This project from the University of Hannover is also similar (nicely done, though light on details): <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iqo.uni-hannover.de\/fileadmin\/institut\/images\/Websitematerial_alt\/stm_english.pdf\">pdf<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/41j.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/stm_english.pdf\">local<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also this project from AFEKA, Tel-Aviv: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.formatex.info\/microscopy4\/1280-1286.pdf\">pdf<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/41j.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/1280-1286.pdf\">local<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another awesome project by some HIGH SCHOOL students Switzerland is also documented <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stm-diy.ch\/index.php\">here<\/a> they didn&#8217;t complete it, but took some measurements. In particular their journal contains a lot of interesting information. (local copy: <a href=\"http:\/\/41j.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/journal.pdf\">journal<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/41j.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/paper.pdf\">paper<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>More recently Dan Berard documented a excellent project on  <a href=\"http:\/\/dberard.com\/home-built-stm\/\">his website<\/a> which includes a lot of very useful information.<\/p>\n<h2>Bimorph benders<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/41j.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bimorphstm.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/41j.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bimorphstm.png\" alt=\"bimorphstm\" width=\"439\" height=\"395\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/41j.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bimorphstm.png 439w, https:\/\/41j.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/bimorphstm-300x269.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 439px) 100vw, 439px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve come across one project that uses Bimorph benders <a href=\"http:\/\/41j.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/blackford1987.pdf\">blackford1987<\/a>. The opamp used is an AD611.<\/p>\n<h2>Piezo Tubes<\/h2>\n<p>Piezo tubes are used in commercial STMs, but they&#8217;re actually not that expensive to buy in small quantities, it just takes a bit of work to hunt out suppliers.
